What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

In simplest terms, a capsule wardrobe is an extremely downsized wardrobe made up of versatile staple pieces. The idea originates from 1970s London, when boutique owner Susie Faux coined the term. Designer Donna Karan then brought the idea to the U.S. a decade later with her “seven easy pieces” collection. Traditionally, capsule wardrobes include approximately 30 items or less, with Faux recommending less than 12. The wardrobe can be added to a couple times a year.

The definition of a capsule wardrobe has evolved over time thanks to ideas from style bloggers like Un-Fancy, whose capsule wardrobe includes 37-pieces rotated every three months.

At its core, a capsule wardrobe is ultimately meant to promote a minimalist style and save money, time, and space — things I’m all for! To me, a capsule wardrobe should include ever-lasting clothes and reusable accessories that will take you from the office to the dance floor without your friends hearing you say, ‘but I haven’t anything to wear – I need a new outfit’ for the 100 billionth time!

I’ve been busy collaborating with Betabrand.com to come up with the essential wardrobe I believe every woman needs to save them time, money, and hassle for every morning and every event.

Capsule Wardrobe Essentials Checklist

To save money, time and effort you want your wardrobe to be full of gorgeous items that can be everyday wear for the office and can easily be accessorised to take you through to the after work drinks and spontaneous night-time dancing. If you love the items you’ve chosen, you will always enjoy wearing them over and over again, styling them in new ways.

These are the 6 essentials you need to own and can easily purchase online to complete your capsule wardrobe.

  1. PantsMy pick: High-waisted dress pant yoga trousers £61.50, Betabrand.com
  2. SkirtMy pick: Nude faux leather pencil skirt £13.32, Choies.com
  3. Crisp White Shirt My pick: Fitted white shirt £12.99, H&M
  4. Statement Necklace My pick: Statement silver necklace £29.97, humblechic.com
  5. Black Handbag My pick: Black zip handbag £25.99, New Look
  6. Boots My pick: Knit-trim black ankle boots £20.33, charlotterusse.com

The most versatile item on this list is definitely the Betabrand pants. I love these pants because they are the ideal office trousers – comfy, stylish and smart – yet totally multi-functional. The stretchy material gives you the flexibility to still do yoga after work or in your lunch-break and the skinny leg gives you a flattering shape when paired with heels and sparkles for a night out.

Hallelujah to the 2-in-1 amazing trousers! They also come in every style to suit your body shape including Cropped-leg for petites.

Black is a great colour to opt for because it goes with everything but I also love the dark grey yoga pants too which are just as everyday.

Once you’ve got your comfy trousers in a classic shade you need one more option for work – a simple and smart pencil skirt. I chose this faux leather midi because it’s a fab neutral shade to pair with a crisp white shirt for work or crop tops for the evenings. Find the pair of women’s pants you love most here.

How to Build Your Own Stylish Capsule Wardrobe

These are my steps to curating your own capsule wardrobe, without sacrificing style or the joy we all get from fashion.

Step 1 — Clean Out Your Closet

Firstly – do you really need everything that’s in your wardrobe? We both know the answer is No. So don’t wait until Spring — have a wardrobe clean out today and get on Vinted or eBay to make some extra money. Those poor clothes that still have their tags on need a caring home. It’s just plain clothes cruelty! Check out my Vinted page for cheap dresses, tops, jumpers, trousers and skirts for sale in great condition.

Step 2 — Pick Your Essentials

Once you’ve gotten rid of what you know you don’t want, it’s time to sort what’s left into three categories:

  1. Currently love / wear
  2. Seasonal
  3. Other

Guess what happens to the “other” category? That’s right — go back to step one and get rid of those clothes!

Make sure you do this for each piece of clothing — bottoms, tops, accessories, and shoes.

Step 3 — Compromise

Now, building a capsule wardrobe can be an unexpectedly emotional and difficult process. That’s why I think it’s important to compromise and give yourself a little wiggle room on your favourite part of fashion, meaning allow yourself to have a little more in this area. For me, that’s accessorizing.

When i’m planning what to wear, accessories are often the favourite part of my outfit and can even be the main asset to show off (that’s why classic clothes are always good to help them stand out!)

If you’re like me and accessories are your thing, think bold statement but neutral shades of additions that can easily be paired with your essential outfit. Sparkly jewels, chunky black boots and a sturdy tailored handbag (big enough to fit all of your daily necessities!) are just what you need to tick off all the essential items on your shopping list.

Step 4 — Make Outfits

Once you have your essentials, start pairing them with each other to make sure you can make a number of outfits with them that will keep you excited and happy. Did you know that with just 27 pieces you can make 100 outfits!? The possibilities are endless, so bring your creativity and imagination with you.

Step 5 — Continue to Reassess

Set a schedule that works for you when it comes to refining your capsule wardrobe and going through the above steps. This can be the well-known 3 month rule, or more or less often, depending on how you feel. Again, we don’t want to take the joy out of the fashion we love, so figure out what works for you. The number one rule is that you LOVE what you own and wear. The moment you don’t, it’s time for a change!

I hope this blog post has given you some New Year inspiration to get yourselves a Capsule Wardrobe.

Beat the January blues with some bargain buys

It’s that time again… you’ve finished off every box of mince pies in the house, stuffed yourself with chocolate and drank enough alcohol to still feel hungover when you woke up for work yesterday morning. This can only mean one thing… the January blues have arrived and it’s back to hearing that early morning alarm and joining the dreaded commute to work.

But the start to 2015 doesn’t have to be as miserable as the weather and neither does your wardrobe!

At this time of year all I want to do is get away to somewhere hot- a tropical island like St. Barts would do great! Unfortunately my purse can’t stretch that far… but it can stretch to some great bargains I’ve found in the January sales. Buying new clothes will always brighten my day no matter how dull and rainy the weather is.

If you haven’t shopped the January sales yet, here some great bargains I have picked out:

Lace bralet comes in black, green and burgandy Topshop £22- £10

Leather Chelsea ankle boots ASOS £60- £30

I don’t know about you but whenever I shop in the sale I can tend to get very carried away and sometimes end up buying things I don’t even need just because “it’s only a fiver”. My wardrobe is already stuffed to the brim so I decided this New Year I would keep these tips in the back of my mind to make sure I don’t go crazy on every shopping spree…

Tips for shopping the sale:

  1. Know what gaps need to filled in your wardrobe.
  2. Think ahead and plan outfits for upcoming occasions and events.
  3. Ask yourself, would I buy this if it wasn’t on sale?
  4. Always try the items on in store to save the hassle of exchanging/credit notes.
  5. Invest in items you know you will wear again and again.

Happy sales shopping and Happy New Year!

London Fashion Weekend

As a cheeky treat I bought my sister and I tickets to the Saturday event of London Fashion Weekend and we loved every minute of our girly and glamorous day.

The venue was Somerset House in London and we headed there for 1.30pm. I have to admit, even just the building looked lush let alone all the fashionistas that were there- pink lights filled the arch way ceilings as you walked through the entrance. It was v.cute.

What my sis wore:

  • Cream Coat New Look
  • Black Leotard Boohoo
  • Black Leather Skirt H&M
  • Leopard Print Scarf Accesorize
  • Black Pumps Primark

The first thing we did was of course SHOP. There so many little pop-up shops for independent boutiques, designers and creatives. There was jewlerry, denim, Levis, fur, coats, hats, steam pressers, Maybelline, Toni & Guy hair salon, OH and you can’t forget the Bueno lounge of massages and free choc. We couldn’t resist grabbing a freebie white Bueno- yummy!

Image

Image

Image

After our shopping spree and trying on and awing over lots of beautiful jewlerry and clothes we went off to watch the catwalk of Julien Macdonald’s Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. WOW. So much sparkle! The garments definitely dazzled me- I just wanted to rip the outfits of the models, well no not quite rip they were way to perfect to ruin, but just gently and sneakily steal them.

Image

The amazing Julien Macdonald was the designer of the striking and dazzling dresses Ellie Goulding has worn on X-factor and to the Brit Awards just last week. Aren’t they just fab?!

Not only did we see the live catwalks but we got to attend fashion event talks in the Vodafone Live Lounge too.

The first talk was with the winner of Women In the Making, which is a competition for women who are creatives and designers who are looking to start/or have opened their own business. The winner of the competition receives money to support their business and make it grow, OH and they get to be mentored by famous female fashion designers, chefs, models and inspirations. Very very cool.

Image

The last talk we went to was with the amazing fashion journalist Hillary Alexander OBE. It was so interesting hearing her experience of starting out in journalism years ago when everyone was writing on typewriters compared to today’s generation of everybody tweeting wherever they go. She told us all about her favorite catwalks, designers who inspire her, and about her life as a fashion journalist. That lady has had one very cool life.

Image

Before we left we just had to have the #CanonFashion experience! These were the images taken to create a 3D video picture that was emailed to us looking like my sister and I were flying cheerleaders. We loved it!

Image

Image

Overall we had such a lush day, I’d definitely go back again- just look at my goodie bag! Inside our Julien Macdonald tote we grabbed Elle magazine, a Kinder Bueno, a Muller light yogurt and just because I was on Vodafone I got a red nail varnish for free. Not too bad eh?!

Purchase of the day!

Purchase of the day!

I am loving my new kimono at a bargain price of just £16. I did not expect to find this cheeky number on my casual weekly food shop at Asda, so I just couldn’t resist throwing it in the trolley.

I love my black and white kimono from H&M but this colorful one with tassels is just as perfect for a Spring/Summer style, chucked over a bikini, as it is pairing with skinny jeans in this winter weather. The tassel trend makes it a fab item to add to your festival rucksack checklist too.

Kimono- £16 George at Asda. Not bad eh?!
