What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

In simplest terms, a capsule wardrobe is an extremely downsized wardrobe made up of versatile staple pieces. The idea originates from 1970s London, when boutique owner Susie Faux coined the term. Designer Donna Karan then brought the idea to the U.S. a decade later with her “seven easy pieces” collection. Traditionally, capsule wardrobes include approximately 30 items or less, with Faux recommending less than 12. The wardrobe can be added to a couple times a year.

The definition of a capsule wardrobe has evolved over time thanks to ideas from style bloggers like Un-Fancy, whose capsule wardrobe includes 37-pieces rotated every three months.

At its core, a capsule wardrobe is ultimately meant to promote a minimalist style and save money, time, and space — things I’m all for! To me, a capsule wardrobe should include ever-lasting clothes and reusable accessories that will take you from the office to the dance floor without your friends hearing you say, ‘but I haven’t anything to wear – I need a new outfit’ for the 100 billionth time!

I’ve been busy collaborating with Betabrand.com to come up with the essential wardrobe I believe every woman needs to save them time, money, and hassle for every morning and every event.

Capsule Wardrobe Essentials Checklist

To save money, time and effort you want your wardrobe to be full of gorgeous items that can be everyday wear for the office and can easily be accessorised to take you through to the after work drinks and spontaneous night-time dancing. If you love the items you’ve chosen, you will always enjoy wearing them over and over again, styling them in new ways.

These are the 6 essentials you need to own and can easily purchase online to complete your capsule wardrobe.

  1. PantsMy pick: High-waisted dress pant yoga trousers £61.50, Betabrand.com
  2. SkirtMy pick: Nude faux leather pencil skirt £13.32, Choies.com
  3. Crisp White Shirt My pick: Fitted white shirt £12.99, H&M
  4. Statement Necklace My pick: Statement silver necklace £29.97, humblechic.com

The most versatile item on this list is definitely the Betabrand pants. I love these pants because they are the ideal office trousers – comfy, stylish and smart – yet totally multi-functional. The stretchy material gives you the flexibility to still do yoga after work or in your lunch-break and the skinny leg gives you a flattering shape when paired with heels and sparkles for a night out.

Hallelujah to the 2-in-1 amazing trousers! They also come in every style to suit your body shape including Cropped-leg for petites.

Black is a great colour to opt for because it goes with everything but I also love the dark grey yoga pants too which are just as everyday.

Once you’ve got your comfy trousers in a classic shade you need one more option for work – a simple and smart pencil skirt. I chose this faux leather midi because it’s a fab neutral shade to pair with a crisp white shirt for work or crop tops for the evenings. Find the pair of women’s pants you love most here.

How to Build Your Own Stylish Capsule Wardrobe

These are my steps to curating your own capsule wardrobe, without sacrificing style or the joy we all get from fashion.

Step 1 — Clean Out Your Closet

Firstly – do you really need everything that’s in your wardrobe? We both know the answer is No. So don’t wait until Spring — have a wardrobe clean out today and get on Vinted or eBay to make some extra money. Those poor clothes that still have their tags on need a caring home. It’s just plain clothes cruelty! Check out my Vinted page for cheap dresses, tops, jumpers, trousers and skirts for sale in great condition.

Step 2 — Pick Your Essentials

Once you’ve gotten rid of what you know you don’t want, it’s time to sort what’s left into three categories:

  1. Currently love / wear
  2. Seasonal
  3. Other

Guess what happens to the “other” category? That’s right — go back to step one and get rid of those clothes!

Make sure you do this for each piece of clothing — bottoms, tops, accessories, and shoes.

Step 3 — Compromise

Now, building a capsule wardrobe can be an unexpectedly emotional and difficult process. That’s why I think it’s important to compromise and give yourself a little wiggle room on your favourite part of fashion, meaning allow yourself to have a little more in this area. For me, that’s accessorizing.

When i’m planning what to wear, accessories are often the favourite part of my outfit and can even be the main asset to show off (that’s why classic clothes are always good to help them stand out!)

If you’re like me and accessories are your thing, think bold statement but neutral shades of additions that can easily be paired with your essential outfit. Sparkly jewels, chunky black boots and a sturdy tailored handbag (big enough to fit all of your daily necessities!) are just what you need to tick off all the essential items on your shopping list.

Step 4 — Make Outfits

Once you have your essentials, start pairing them with each other to make sure you can make a number of outfits with them that will keep you excited and happy. Did you know that with just 27 pieces you can make 100 outfits!? The possibilities are endless, so bring your creativity and imagination with you.

Step 5 — Continue to Reassess

Set a schedule that works for you when it comes to refining your capsule wardrobe and going through the above steps. This can be the well-known 3 month rule, or more or less often, depending on how you feel. Again, we don’t want to take the joy out of the fashion we love, so figure out what works for you. The number one rule is that you LOVE what you own and wear. The moment you don’t, it’s time for a change!

I hope this blog post has given you some New Year inspiration to get yourselves a Capsule Wardrobe.

Friday Favourites- Co-ordinates

Friday Favourites- Co-ordinates
Since booking  holidays for this summer, I have been dreaming of the perfect outfit to match some sun instead of the not-so-gorgeous English weather we are currently having over hear. Turkey and America sounds to me like I need an outfit for some hot hot hot weather and  I thought the matchy matchy tend would be the key to what I NEED.
All three outfits I put together are great looks the summer- day to night. The Boohoo red and white floral co-ordinates is also perfect for workday wear, paired with white peep toe heels and subtle rings.
My favourite look is the bright and colourful Topshop co-ords which would look great with the top tucked into the high waisted and belted with a pastel ASOS belt (which even more fab because it is on sale at under a fiver!)
I am loving all off the shoulder looks at the moment, I just bought a grey ASOS off the shoulder top and I’ve been trying it on with different looks to get its full use.  This blue and white co-ords number is from Motel and I think it is one of those looks that would look casual for a summers day by pairing it with a floaty hat (to protect any head sun burn- not just to look stylish) but can be glammed up for the evening with a clutch, heels and a statement necklace.
If you’re loving the co-ords look, get shopping!

Valentines wish list <3

valentines wishlistHave you been playing cupid for your friends recently or dropping hints of what you want to the boyf? Well most probably because the lovey dovey 14th of February is very much around the corner. And if you aren’t with someone-  why not treat YOURSELF to a cheeky shopping spree.

Anyways I decided to drop my hints a bit more obviously with this cheeky wishlist I created of all the gifts I wouldn’t mind receiving this valentines day. These wishlist gifts are also my dream wardrobe at the minute (items that are currently in my online shopping basket that I’m waiting to afford to splurge on!)

The slip dress: I have wanted a cami dress for ages but they always seem to be too long on me- being 5ft 3 is never an advantage for buying clothes. Firstly you can’t always reach the items you want to try on and secondly even the smallest sizes are too small. That’s why I am very grateful petite collections were invented.

The scarf: I have a huge love for thick and chunky scarfs, especially when we are currently experiencing weather like one of the ‘wettest Januarys on record’. I just love having fluffly scarfs to keep you cosy and also brighten up or add something extra to an outfit.

The bowler hat: Ok putting this item on my wishlist was a bit of a gamble because in all honesty I don’t reckon I would suit one but I just think say are sooooo damn cute! I haven’t actually been brave enough to try one on yet, I think because I am embarrassed too incase people look at me and think, ‘you look like a wannabee Kate Moss!’ Which I guess is true because I do wish I could pull off everything she does!

The nail polish: I’m always painting my nails a new color, often to match my mood or outfit. The current trend is the nude shade and Barry M is one of my fave makes, so I really want to get my hands a bottle and test out the color on my nails.

The heels: Omg aren’t these shoes just to die for! Not like I’d have any room whatsoever to fit these beuties on my shoes rack (I designed it to look like Sarah Jessica-Parker’s in Sex & The City!) but I would find an even better place for them. I’m just in love and I keep picturing different outfits to pair them perfectly with!

The statement necklace: I am a statement necklace addict but my excuse for one more to add to my collection is that I haven’t got a summery pink one yet and coral is my absolute favourite color ever. It just makes me feel happy and think of the lovely hot and sunny weather!

The other dress: I saw this dress and I thought what an absolute bargain, I want it! Forever 21 always have such lovely clothes and at mega bargain prices!!

The bag: Ok this was really cheeky but ever since I laid eyes on this Michael Kors handbag I just could not stop picturing putting my purse and phone inside and carrying it around with me proudly on my arm. I love the tan colour in it too and when I get paid I might just have to treat myself!

I am definitely feeling Millie-withdrawal symptoms. Fashionista Millie, now Mrs Manderson, never failed to bring weekly style inspiration to our television screens. My Monday fix of Made in Chelsea is definitely lacking a major style icon.

Those of you who agree, have no fear because… Millie’s ‘Style Diary’ blog brings us everything we need in a daily fashion fix up.
