A guide to this season’s winter coat trends

After celebrating Bonfire Night this week, I’ve definitely started to feel like we’re in the cold temperatures of Winter now. Maximum faux fur has been the essential being dragged out of my wardrobe lately, and of course my fluffiest and warmest coats.

With help from some great tips over at Farfetch, I have put together this Winter Coat Guide to keep you looking bang-on trend and keeping warm this season.

The Trends

  1. Leather Trench

I love the mysterious yet sophisticated look this coat can bring to any Winter outfit. The leather trench is perfect for pairing with your night-time party wardrobe- sheltering you from showers as you make your move to the bar.

My Pick- Black Faux Leather Trench Coat, Missguided £50

2. The Great White

A white coat should be a key staple to any fashionista’s wardrobe. I absolutely love the colour because you can effortlessly wear it with any other item, during this season or in colder evenings of Summer.

My pick- Cream Belted Wool Blend Coat, Topshop £89

3. Military Cape Coat

Keeping you warm and snug, this military number is the best coat to ensure to stay on the frontline of style this Winter season. Pair with stomping lace up boots and work this military look.

My Pick- Black Military Cape Coat, Wallis £52.50

4. The Ankle Grazer

This bang-on Victorian trend coat is a real flattering style, shaping to your silhouette, and making you stand out in the crowd with its floor-sweeping length. A real showstopper for the colder months.

My Pick- Stone floor-length coat, New Look £40

5. The Hot Fuzz

Wild thing fur is the only thing you’ll want to snuggle into when the icy chill creeps in- a trend that has been particularly high on my fashion agenda for this Autumn/Winter season.

My Pick- Blue turndown collar faux fur coat, pinkqueen.com $85

6. English Lady

This style showcases the proper English heritage coat, featuring Prince of Wales checked prints and tweed textures. Top this classic look with a simple roll-neck jumper and brogues for a comfy and sophisticated off-duty winter look.

My Pick- Lapel striped red tweed coat, Romwe $85

S/S 14 beauty trends and an interview with Maybelline makeup artist

Spring may seem far away but beauty trends from the Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Week have emerged on the catwalk to get our faces ready for some better weather.

The colours of candy seem to be making their way to our lips this Spring with shades of neon orange and bright berry. This Spring/Summer you can forget about your statement necklaces because it’s all about the statement lids whether you’re pulling off the cat-eye trend or shading with geometric blue.

Maybelline makeup artist, Kirsten Bassett, gives us her tips on how to apply each trend and her favourite ways to style each style to its best.

Orange Lipstick

There was no shortage of designers opting for various shades of orange on their models’ lips. Designers including Donna Karan, Christian Siriano and DKNY were fans of this fruity lipstick shade.  DKNY Makeup artists mixed Maybelline Colour Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange and Neon Red to create their perfect shade. Rag & Bone (top) used an electric shade which proves a brighter shade can be flattering on a range of skin tones. Dsquared2 (bottom) used a more tropical coral shade to create a modern take on a 50’s vintage look.

Over to Miss Basset…

“My favourite beauty trend for Spring/Summer 14 is the bold orange lip. It’s the new red lip.

Orange shades are everywhere and I particularly love how much variety there is in this colour. There is a shade to suit everyone and they are all modern and wearable.

Orange lips can be worn matte or glossed.

My favourite look is a matte orange lip as the focus, with minimal eye makeup and a strong brow to balance the face. This look works best on dark haired models with naturally strong/full brows.”

Her tips:

  • Always use a brush to apply lip colour with precision
  • Use a lighter shade in the centre of the lips to give the illusion of a plumper lip
  • Apply lip liner in a matching colour over the entire lip to make the lips last longer
  • Blot for a slightly matte finish or add a clear lip gloss for more of a shine

Blue Eyeshadow

A solid blue shade will give statement to your eye lids from lash line to the crease. Peacock and royal blue were showcased on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week.  At Marc by Marc Jacobs, models wore a rich solid blue shade created with Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Colour in ice, patted onto lids, and topped with a layer of the Curacao shade from the Shiseido Eye Colour Bar Compact. David Koma (right) proved how royal blue can look just as good as black in a cut out flick look.

Over to Miss Bassett…

“Blue eyes have been the focus for a lot of designers both at London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week.

Bold shades like peacock and royal blue were everywhere from Marc Jacobs to Zoe Jordan varying from subtle liner to full blown eyeshadow.

During London Fashion Week with Maybelline, I created a subtle and flattering way to wear blue that can suit almost anybody. This look was a cat eye flick using blue instead of black.

I used colour tattoo in electric blue with an illamasqua angled brush for the perfect flick.

Her tips:

  • Keep the rest of the makeup to a minimum to keep this look modern and not like an 80’s revival
  • Use blue shades for cat eye flicks too
  • Pat eyeshadow on to eye lids to create a crescent above the creases
  • Layer powdery blue shades to create a disco-like look

Cat-eye trend

It’s time to bring out the black liquid liner because cat-eyes are back again and big for the Spring. The cat eyes were a key feature on the catwalk for Tracy Reese and Dennis Basso’s collection.  As seen in Anthony Vaccarello (top) cut out flicks in a geometric liner give a very modern twist on the cat-eye/ liner look.

Over to Miss Bassett…

“I love cat eyes. Liner flicks will always be in fashion so it’s good to master a precise flick.

The key is a good brush- I love illamasqua angled brush for creating a precise flick. During LFWE I used this to apply lasting drama gel liner (my preferred type of eye liner).

Once you’ve mastered that you can experiment with different cat eye effects- experiment with other liners such as kohl and blend out of the lids for more impact.”

  • Use a good angled brush to create a precise flick
  • Use a thin cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to get a clean line
  • Experiment with different eye liners
  • Blend out of the lids for more impact

Kirsten Basset said: “My favourite beauty trend for Spring/Summers 14 is the orange lip and geometric eyes but not worn together of course. I love bold, simple, block colours and graphic lines, and the versatility of the two looks.”

So say hello to Spring with these new beauty trends and get experimenting!

Friday Favourites- Co-ordinates

Friday Favourites- Co-ordinates
Since booking  holidays for this summer, I have been dreaming of the perfect outfit to match some sun instead of the not-so-gorgeous English weather we are currently having over hear. Turkey and America sounds to me like I need an outfit for some hot hot hot weather and  I thought the matchy matchy tend would be the key to what I NEED.
All three outfits I put together are great looks the summer- day to night. The Boohoo red and white floral co-ordinates is also perfect for workday wear, paired with white peep toe heels and subtle rings.
My favourite look is the bright and colourful Topshop co-ords which would look great with the top tucked into the high waisted and belted with a pastel ASOS belt (which even more fab because it is on sale at under a fiver!)
I am loving all off the shoulder looks at the moment, I just bought a grey ASOS off the shoulder top and I’ve been trying it on with different looks to get its full use.  This blue and white co-ords number is from Motel and I think it is one of those looks that would look casual for a summers day by pairing it with a floaty hat (to protect any head sun burn- not just to look stylish) but can be glammed up for the evening with a clutch, heels and a statement necklace.
If you’re loving the co-ords look, get shopping!

Aren’t we all missing fashionista Millie from Made in Chelsea?!

Millie's Style Diary blog

Millie’s Style Diary blog

I am definitely feeling Millie-withdrawal symptoms. Fashionista Millie, now Mrs Manderson, never failed to bring weekly style inspiration to our television screens. My Monday fix of Made in Chelsea is definitely lacking a major style icon.

Those of you who agree, have no fear because… Millie’s ‘Style Diary’ blog brings us everything we need in a daily fashion fix up.

Millie’s fashion blog posts her style secrets in a diary of her day-to-day wardrobe choices. A gallery of images poses Millie modelling key trends of this Autumn/Winter season including: leopard print, statement necklaces, leather skirts and fur coats and cardies to keep us looking stylish whilst feeling cosy to survive in this freezing winter.

Each image is captioned with where each item of clothing is from to help us with ideas to add to our Christmas list or our fashion shopping list for our days off.

Who has style on our high streets?

That’s what I found out. I put on my fashion binoculars in the hunt to discover who had style in Bournemouth Town.

5 girls in particular stood out to me on my walkabouts. Their clothes were unique and bang-on-trend for this Autumn/Winter season, from the glamorous cosy fur gilet to the striking checked print leggings. There wardrobes feature key style essentials that we need to get our hands on! ImageImageImageImage
